I am very worried about the current enthusiasm for check-chain collars. The public seem to believe the be-all and end-all of training their dog is having it on the end of a chain. I agree there is a time and place for a check-chain collar, but it is certainly not on a puppy under six months of age, and, in my opinion, should not be used by inexperienced people. If you train your puppy correctly from the beginning, there will never be any need to revert to a chain. Seventy-five per cent of dog owners have a dragging dog. Why? Because they didn’t think to train their dog at an early age. I have seen four- and five-month-old puppies completely out of hand and then it’s so easy and so much less trouble to put a chain around the dog’s neck, whereas a little effort and patience on the owner’s part would prevent this. It’s worth remembering that the more you let your dog pull, the more he will develop his neck muscles, until eventually he will be so strong that even a check-chain collar will’not prevent him from dragging you down the road. I prefer to use a half check-chain on the older dog that has got out of hand. It cannot be put on wrongly and, used with the right technique, can be as effective as a full check-chain without any of the disastrous results. Most owners blame their dogs for pulling. I get many desperate dog owners confiding in me: ‘Of course, it’s his own fault,’ they tell me. ‘Look at him, he’s choking himself on the end of that chain.’ These poor dogs have never had the opportunity of the correct training. They always believe the chain around their neck will be tight and so constantly try to get away from it. If you’ve ever used a chain lead and had it wrapped around your hand with a pulling dog, you will soon feel the effect it has on your flesh. So why do such a vast amount of owners not think it has any effect on the flesh of a dog’s neck? It all boils down to mutual respect and unless you have respect for your dog, he will never have any respect for you.

The Recall

The garden is a very good place for training your puppy to come back to you. If he won’t come back in the garden, he’s not going to come back when you let him off the lead in the fields. When you see that your puppy is engrossed in some exciting new smell, call him. Now is the time to put your extrovert character into use. Your calls should be of great excitement. Pretend you’ve just won £250,000 on the pools and you are telling the world about it. There aren’t many puppies who can resist that sort of call. Most of them will come galloping back to see what all the excitement is about. At which time, you sit on the ground and either give him a titbit or play with his favourite toy. If puppy refuses to come to you, try sitting on the ground and playing with his toy, throwing it up and down in the air and using lots of exciting words like Hooray or Yippee. Don’t worry about the neighbours, they’ll be convinced you’ve lost your marbles, but who cares?

If your puppy still ignores you, you have a hard nut to crack and I don’t envy you. Now is the time to use low, animal cunning. While your puppy is totally engrossed, creep up behind him and give him a gentle little pinch on the back leg, then dash away shouting joyously. As far as puppy’s concerned, it wasn’t you who touched him but some invisible monster and his automatic reaction will be to come to you for reassurance.

These exercises should be carried out as many times a day as possible, until you get an instant reaction from your puppy. Whenever you call he comes. Dinnertime is always a good reinforcement of the recall, so remember to use the same commands of calling your puppy in when you offer his dinner.
