Cat Warts

Warts are small benign growths on the skin surface which often have a characteristic wrinkled appearance. They are common in dogs, less so in cats. All skin growths should be checked out by a veterinary surgeon in case removal is necessary. Warts near the eye may be removed quickly owing to possible interference with the eyelids.

Urgency

Warts and other small skin lumps are not urgent but should be checked at a suitable routine appointment. If they become traumatised, they may bleed but this usually stops quickly and blood loss is minor.

First aid & nursing

Simple first aid for bleeding (e.g. direct pressure for 10 minutes or a light bandage) may be required.

If monitoring a wart or growth for the veterinary surgeon, it can be helpful to take a photograph or note down the measurements, since imagination can play tricks on whether the lump is growing.

Homoeopathic first aid

Arnica can be given if the wart gets damaged and bleeds. Give 1 tablet hourly for several hours.

Sometimes, homoeopathy may be helpful with warts (especially in cases of multiple warts — again, commoner in dogs). The remedies are Thuja or Nitric acid, 1 tablet twice daily for 10 days. Re-assess the situation after 1 month.

Veterinary treatment

Examination is needed to make sure the lump is indeed a wart. Your surgeon’s advice should then be followed about whether removal is necessary. Periodic checks may be made on warts that are not being removed, especially those close to the eye.

Cat Wax (ears)

Ear wax is a natural protective substance which, by a gradual process of production, drying and flaking out the ear, keeps the ear canals healthy. Normal ear wax is a pale colour and is not usually noticeable in the healthy ear although it imparts a shiny and slightly tacky surface coating to the ear lining. Some cats do tend to have waxier ears than others and may tend to accumulate wax, even without any other problems; this can cause discomfort. Use of a mild ear cleaner or a few drops of olive or almond oil (at blood heat) in the ears once every two weeks will help.

In cases of irritation in the ear (e.g. due to ear mites, allergy or infection), wax production increases in response to the damage, and then it can become visible and cause problems due to build up. A characteristic sign of ear mites in cats is masses of dry crumbly and dark wax in the ear openings. Itching and head shaking can result.

For more details, and also for how to apply drops or ear cleaner, see under EAR PROBLEMS.
