A cat door not only benefits the cat, it brings peace of mind to the cat owner.

The hole should be cut in the bottom of the door on the lock- side so any framing will not interfere with the normal door operation. The door needs to be approximately 250x 250 mm or smaller, depending on the size of your cat.

The door shown in the drawings can be locked for security, if required, or to simply stop a draught. Make sure that the cat door is positioned far enough away from the door lock, so that it cannot be reached by long-armed bandits! In any case, don’t leave the key in the lock.

MATERIALS
Timber
PVA adhesive nails

Sandpaper

Paint

Lock, optional

TOOLS
Electric drill

Jigsaw or pad saw

Hammer

Chisel or electric router plane

Tape and pencil

TIME
4 hours

1 Remove door, mark out the opening (250 x 250 mm) and cut out. The opening should be approximately 100 mm from the edge of the door. Take care not to damage the facing of the door. Use a fine bladed jigsaw or pad saw.

2 Make up the cat door frame from 60 x 12 mm DAR (PAR) timber to outside dimensions of 250 x 250 mm.

3 Make up the door from 8 mm plywood with a timber trimmer on top. Create an 8 mm slot in the trimmer with saw and chisel or an electric router. Round off the top with a plane and sandpaper. Leave 2 mm clearance around the door and pivot it on 32 mm brass wood screws. Make holes in the frame with clearance to allow the door to swing freely.

4 Insert the frame and door as an assembly into the pre-cut hole in the back door. Secure it to the door with 8 mm quadrant on both sides (see fig. 3). Fit lock if required.

5 Paint with a good oil-based primer then one or two coats of gloss.
