Unless you have already reserved a kitten from the litter of a mother cat whose owner you know, your first port of call when looking for a cat to adopt should be your local vet’s. Most veterinary surgeries display notice boards on which people whose cats have produced kittens, or those who sadly can no longer keep their older cats, can ‘advertise’ felines in need of a good home. Many veterinary nurses are in any case founts of knowledge and advice, both regarding reputable cat sources and aspects of feline care. Never buy a kitten from a pet shop: not only may it have been traumatised by its noisy surroundings, but it will in all likelihood have been exposed to a host of germs. And if a stray cat decides to adopt you, before giving it a permanent home, make every effort to ensure that it is not already part of a loving family, particularly if it looks well fed.
A vet’s notice board may also display the details of cat-rescue organisations, which is how, having first called to make an appointment, we found ourselves in the feline nursery of a suburban cat sanctuary where we were introduced to, among other kittens, Melchior and Caspar. Before making our choice, we were vetted to assess our suitability for cat- ownership and were also asked to sign an agreement undertaking to have the cats neutered; to take full responsibility for their welfare and to give them a happy and loving home; to obtain veterinary treatment in case of illness or injury; and to ensure that they wore identity tags when outside the home. In addition, we undertook to allow a member of the cat sanctuary to visit our home to check that the cats were happily settled; to return the cats to the sanctuary if we could no longer keep them; and, in the event of them going missing, to report their loss so that a search could be instigated. All of these stipulations had the cats‘ welfare at heart, and we were happy to go along with them, as well as make a modest donation towards the upkeep of the cat sanctuary.
